Tournament of the Tigers!!
Jan 26, 2018
Did your student come home talking about teachers dressing up in costumes and urging them to read? Or perhaps what you heard from your student was that Ms.Powell was dressed as a tiger and there were a whole bunch of teachers acting silly on the stage before school started? Curious about the real scoop? Here it is! The various Tiger Houses are reading to get points and competing against the rest of the Tiger Houses. The Tournament of the Tigers has a very Harry Potter ish feel to it and the students are really excited about it (or perhaps they're excited about seeing teachers that they know and love act so silly! from left to right - Ms, Chandler, Ms. Powell and Ms. Boisseau |
Goals of the Tournament of Tigers:
What are the houses/colors, and who are their leaders/personas?
Last but not least - our Media Specialist is the Mage of Media – Ms. Kuniansky (neutral)
How is the game played?
Students will earn paw prints based on the number of books that they have read and passed the AR quiz. Each book passed is worth 1 paw print to even the field. Second grade students will be introduced to projects based on books they have read. Book projects will also be worth paw prints (amount is to be determined).
How are points earned?
Students read a book and take the AR quiz. IF they pass the quiz, they earn 1 paw print for their tiger house. The points earned will be displayed on a bulletin board on the main hall. Students must take and pass the quizzes by THURSDAY in order to be awarded points on FRIDAY.
When and how will points be awarded?
There will be an assembly at 7:30 am on Friday mornings to award points. Students will meet in the cafeteria to see the points awarded and be encouraged to read more books in the coming week.
When does the game begin/end?
We start on January 17 and end on March 30.
What are the ways that there is competition?
Students earn points by reading books, but also by completing challenges. Challenges are randomly done during assemblies and any time that Ms. K feels the need to “liven things up a bit”. During the assembly, the personas will choose a random stone from a bag. Stones are 5 black and 1 white. The persona that chooses the white stone gets a challenge. If the challenge is successfully met, the team earns point(s). If not, the team loses points. Challenges might be: read 20 books in 2 days, read the entire Dr. Seuss collection in 1 week, compete in a Kahoot that is reading based, etc. Ms. K can also declare that the next x number of students to get 100% on an AR quiz get to attend a BreakOut. The winner of the breakout earns 5 extra points for their house. Other challenges will be explained as they arise.
Do students have to participate?
Participation is voluntary. You cannot force students to participate. Success will depend on enthusiasm and encouragement from peers and teachers.
What is the teacher’s role?
Continue to support best reading practices in your classroom.
Give students time to read silently and take AR quizzes.
Talk about books with your students.
Encourage students to participate in the game.
What is in it for the winners?
The winning tiger house will receive movie and popcorn!!
- To get kids reading,
- to help students develop a love of reading,
- to support self-selected, independent reading and
- TO HAVE FUN!

STEM Day
10.27.17
This month's challenge was to use twigs, sticks and other "found" items to build an art installation. Students had to measure so the art installation fit into the space, draw a plan as a team for the installation and then build it together. STEM Day also coincided with "dress up as a character from a book" day as part of Red Ribbon Week! |

DeKalb County School District to continue 20-minute extended-day class schedule through November 30.
DeKalb County School District (DCSD) will continue to add 20 minutes to its school day through Thursday, Nov. 30, in an effort to recapture much of the instructional time lost due to the storm known as Hurricane Irma.
Other important aspects of this plan include:
- There will be no 20-minute extended day on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
- DCSD schools and offices will also remain open on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 7) as the district ensures that students don’t miss out on lessons vital to their academic achievement.
- Schools will also be closed Nov. 20-24 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
- Winter Break will remain as originally scheduled.
In sum, these moves will allow DCSD to recover three of the four days lost to Irma. The district will waive the fourth day.

NEW INFO!
About the extra 20 minutes each day -
From the Dekalb County Schools website
9/27/17
DeKalb County School District (DCSD) will adjust its make-up schedule for four days of lost instructional time due to Hurricane Irma, following both continuing collaboration between the Board of Education and Superintendent/CEO R. Stephen Green, and focused outreach to stakeholder groups.
DCSD will take the following steps to recover two of the lost instructional days:
• The school day will be extended by 20 minutes from Monday, Oct. 2 to Tuesday, Oct. 31
• Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 7) will become an instructional day.
The district is now considering the most effective method to recover one or both of the remaining instructional days. To accomplish this, DCSD will seek input directly from its principals, parent groups and community stakeholder groups through Friday, Oct. 13.
That input will be strongly considered by Dr. Green in his final decision, to be announced on Monday, Oct. 16. Per Board policy, Dr. Green is empowered to make “scheduling changes to the school day because of inclement weather or other emergency conditions.”
“Throughout this process, I have been continually working with our Board to distill our various options into the best solution for our students and families. We considered various input and thoughts from across the board. The identification of two make-up opportunities thus far is a good starting point,” said Green. “The final decision will be filtered through a collaborative process driven by one shared desire for both the Board and myself: to protect and recover instructional time, especially for those students most at risk.”
DCSD will embark on an aggressive communications campaign to keep students, parents and the community informed about how this temporary schedule change will impact student transportation, after school programs, and athletics. Those updates will be available via its website at www.dekalbschoolsga.organd through its mobile app and accounts on Facebook and Twitter.

Making up lost instructional time is key after Hurricane Irma. DeKalb County School District to extend school days by 20 minutes from October 2 to December 20.In order to recapture precious instructional time lost due to Hurricane Irma, DeKalb County School District (DCSD) will extend its school day by 20 minutes, Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, through the end of the first semester on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017.
DCSD schools and offices will also remain open on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 7) as the district ensures that students don’t miss out on lessons vital to their academic achievement.
Superintendent/CEO R. Stephen Green and his leadership team emphasized the need to regain opportunities for students to make progress, rather than use the four inclement weather days built into the district’s calendar.
“We did not want to simply recoup lost moments. Our most precious commodity is instructional time, and we want to make this an effective learning opportunity,” said Green. “We lost four days and we’re trying to be as creative and productive as we can about recapturing that time. Extending the school day with this schedule is the least disruptive for all parties.”
RECAP: Extended school day schedule from Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, through Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017:
• Dismissal will occur 20 minutes later than normal, Monday-Friday, each week.
• Parents will receive a notification from their campus regarding the dismissal time.
The decision to extend the school day was a collaborative effort across all DCSD divisions. In addition, Dr. Green is empowered by DCSD Board of Education Policy to make “scheduling changes to the school day because of inclement weather or other emergency conditions.”
A primary goal was not to impact Fall Break or Winter Break for both families and employees who may have commitments based on the approved school year calendar. Also, with the unpredictability of North Georgia weather in the winter, the district does not want to use all its inclement weather days before the onset of that season.
